Hot dog sales sizzle as makers Ball Park Franks and Oscar Mayer embroiled in suit
by Emily Fredrix
MILWAUKEE - Hot dog sales are set to sizzle as people look for ways to eat on the cheap and the summer grilling season starts. But the scramble to be top dog in the US$2.1-billion market has sent the makers of Ball Park Franks and Oscar Mayer wieners to court.
Blue Double Cross
by Paul Krugman
That didn’t take long. Less than two weeks have passed since much of the medical-industrial complex made a big show of working with President Obama on health care reform — and the double-crossing is already well under way. Indeed, it’s now clear that even as they met with the president, pretending to be cooperative, insurers were gearing up to play the same destructive role they did the last time health reform was on the agenda.
Cheney: Support for Israel Feeds Terrorism
by Ray McGovern
If we hear in the coming days that former Vice President Dick Cheney has fired one of his speechwriters — or perhaps grounded Lynne or Liz — it will be clear why.Oozing out of the sleazy speech he gave Thursday at the American Enterprise Institute was an inadvertent truth regarding the Israeli albatross hanging around the neck of U.S. policy in the Middle East.
Think Tank: US Climate Bill Falls Short
by Commondreams.org
WASHINGTON - A drastically weakened U.S. climate bill released Monday favors polluting industries over truly sustainable clean energy solutions, argues Daphne Wysham, director of a sustainable energy and economy think tank. What's the Story?"Right out of the starting gate, the [American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009] provides a ridiculous number of giveaways to industry," writes Wysham, Institute for Policy Studies fellow and director of the Sustainable Energy & Economy Network.
Cheney's Speech Ignored Some Inconvenient Truths
by Jonathan S. Landay and Warren P. Strobel
WASHINGTON - Former Vice President Dick Cheney's defense Thursday of the Bush administration's policies for interrogating suspected terrorists contained omissions, exaggerations and misstatements. In his address to the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative policy organization in Washington, Cheney said that the techniques the Bush administration approved, including waterboarding - simulated drowning that's considered a form of torture - forced nakedness and sleep deprivation, were "legal" and produced information that "prevented the violent death of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of innocent people."
Missing Weapons: The Nation's Great Threat
by Allison Kilkenny
The recent foiling of a terrorist plot to attack a New York City synagogue has caused some to question the wiseness of Obama's decision to close the Guantanamo prisons and bring its detainees to the United States. But what these individuals fail to acknowledge is that crazy people have and will always be with us, and no amount of anti-terrorism funding will ever make America completely impenetrable to attack. Risk will always be with us, but Americans should invest in the securement of weaponry that could be used by any future crazies out there.
Does Cheney Make Obama Look Good Enough?
by David Swanson
Dick Cheney could make anyone look decent, honorable, and law-abiding by comparison. But is the existence of someone worse, no matter how many hours our media monopoly gives him, enough to make Obama's decisions acceptable? Let's look at their pair of speeches given on Thursday in Washington, D.C., and depicted as a debate by the media.
The Church of WTF?
by Ed Naha
Admittedly, I've been out of the loop recently, with my town nearly burning down for the fourth time in less than two years and having to evacuate my family for the second time in six months. The threat of all that immolation stuff distracted me from important stories like the great Obama mustard debate and the mystery of why Dick Cheney is allowed to speak in public about anything but the topic he knows best - shooting elderly lawyers in the face.
Don't pin the recession on AIG's Joe Cassano
by Matt Taibbi
Cassano, who ran AIG's financial-products division in London, "almost single-handedly is responsible for bringing AIG down and by reference the economy of this country", says Jackie Speier, a US representative. "They basically took people's hard-earned money, gambled it and lost everything. And he must be held accountable for the dereliction of his duty, and for the havoc he's wrought on America. I don't think the American people will be content, nor will I, until we hear the click of the handcuffs on his wrists."
