Hillary's Gift to Women
by The Nation
In Friday's New York Times, Susan Faludi rejoiced over Hillary Clinton's destruction of the myth of female prissiness and innate moral superiority, hailing Clinton's "no-holds-barred pugnacity" and her media reputation as "nasty" and "ruthless." Future female presidential candidates will owe a lot to the race of 2008, Faludi wrote, "when Hillary Clinton broke through the glass floor and got down with the boys."
Has the Fuel Pricing "Strategy" Become a "Conspiracy?"
by Fred Cederholm
I’ve been thinking about strategies. Actually I’ve been thinking about the 15 cent increase, inflation, the FED, energy and food, investigations, and conspiracies. A strategy is a coordinated or concerted plan of action undertaken to achieve a pre-desired end to something.
Health Care As the New Terrorist to Fear
by David Sirota
Thanks to America's health care system, today was a very stressful day for me. My story is so typical as to be boring -- which is a really sad commentary. This morning, while thumbing through some routine paperwork, my wife discovered that I have no health insurance. Without going into the details, we missed a bi-annual deadline for payment -- a deadline that the company buried in fine print, and one that the company didn't even bother to tell us was approaching, or even missed after the fact. They just ended my coverage, with not so much as a letter or a phone call.
It Is Now Safe to Vote for Obama: He Wore a Flag Pin
by Robin Elliot
How could anyone think Barack Obama was qualified to run for president... until now? He has finally revealed his patriotism by ::drum roll:: attaching a brooch to his lapel, one that was most likely made in China. But that little metal symbol has convinced me that, at last, he can be commander in chief. It must also mean he's no longer a Muslim, because the two are linked. Aren't we all relieved?
Frank Rich's Imaginary America
by Max Blumenthal
This Sunday, Frank Rich reported some of the most exciting news that has appeared on the pages of the New York Times in a very long time. According to Rich, Americans are on the verge of transcending the racial and cultural rifts that divided them for centuries. There simply aren't "enough racists of any class in America, let alone in swing states, to determine the results come fall," the former theater critic insisted. This statement is so true that Rich did not even need to bolster it with actual statistical evidence.
Preventing an Arms Race in Outer Space
by James Carroll
As World War I broke out, Henry James identified an inexorable current that had been running below international events, leading to the “monstrous scene” of August “as its grand Niagara.” Below the glassy upriver surface, the swift tide had been driven by habits of mind, arms merchant greed, imperial hubris, and a politics that was wholly inadequate. At the deadly cascade, nations tumbled into the most violent century in history. Writer Jonathan Schell cites the Niagara metaphor to define the still running momentum of war.

But marijuana activists expressed doubt about the findings.
Fox commentator: Ron Paul revolt could be 'disaster' for Republicans
by David Edwards and Muriel Kane
Rep. Ron Paul is still in the GOP race and even drew 16% of the vote in the recent Pennsylvania Republican primary. Now his supporters are planning to stage a "revolt" at the Republican National Convention in September, possibly with the aim of securing Paul a prime time speaking slot.
