Global Hot Spots of Hunger Set to Explode
by Thalif Deen
As food prices continue to escalate worldwide, some of the poorest nations in the developing world are in danger of social and political upheavals.0415 10The unrest, which is likely to spread to nearly 40 countries, has been triggered largely by a sharp increase in the prices of staple commodities, including wheat, rice, sorghum, maize and soybeans, according to the United Nations.
Eggheads and Cheese Balls
by Maureen Dowd
I’m not bitter.I’m not writing this just because I grew up in a house with a gun, a strong Catholic faith, an immigrant father, brothers with anti-illegal immigrant sentiments and a passion for bowling. (My bowling trophy was one of my most cherished possessions.)
Commentary: An 'average' American will never be president
by Roland S. Martin
Can we all just stop the silly nonsense over who is an elitist and whether an "average American" will occupy the White House?Listening to the punditry today, you would think folks who revel in the comedy of Larry the Cable Guy or Katt Williams really would have a shot at the White House.
Obama v. Hillary in Indiana
by JB Peebles
Obama vs. HillaryI've concluded the Obama can't beat McCain in the general election. I'm basing this opinion on nothing more than my personal experiences living in a very Red State, Indiana. Indiana, for the first time in years, also happens to be a vital state for any would-be Democratic Presidential candidate.
Dissing God
by Allison Kilkenny
Outside his audacity of hope, it could be Barack Obama's audacious scrutiny of religion that becomes his undoing.Did I mention it's 2008? And yet we're still talking about God. Despite being so advanced and clever in all aspects of our existence, human beings are still talking about a bearded dude, who supposedly walked on water, and could cure people with one touch, but couldn't navigate his way off a cross.
Pope Benedict Go Home
by Margaret Kimberley
Why would American media, politicians and average citizens welcome a Hitler Youth member who personally worked to insure Bush's re-election and who openly praised the genocide conducted against American Indians? If the man in question becomes pope, it obviously doesn't matter what he says or does. Otherwise sensible people suddenly act like illiterate medieval peasants and fight to kiss his ring.
Bush/Cheney: High Crimes and Big Criminals
by Jaime O'Neill
Crime: (krim) n. 1. an action that is deemed injurious to the public welfare, and is legally prohibited. 2. criminal activity and those engaged in it... 3. any serious wrongdoing. 4. a foolish act or practice-- Random House Webster's DictionaryIt saddens me to think it and to write it, but it would seem to be an inarguable fact that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are war criminals, and they have been supported in their reckless criminality by far too many Americans. Because of these two men, and those who advised and enabled them, hundreds of thousands of people have died unnecessarily. More than 4,000 young American men and women have had their lives cut short in Iraq, and tens of thousands more have suffered injuries that are certain to shorten their lives, too, or, at the very least, to make their lives immeasurably more difficult and painful while they remain alive.
Cross-Dressing For McCain: Pennsylvania Politics Becomes A Camp, David-Goliath War of Words
by Steve Young
RuPaul would be so proud. It may look and sound like Democracy, but if you look behind the talk radio curtain, you'll find Rush Limbaugh duck-taping Karl Rovian junk back between the thighs of Republican partisanship. In the spirit of our forefathers who forged out country and our soldiers who have fought and died heroically over the centuries, the loudest of the Lords of Loud has created a campaign to corrupt the presidential primary into a Machiavellian game of pretend.
Obama: Just another political phony?
by Doug Thompson
As the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination descends further into political hell, the Barack Obama campaign of change is changing into just another charade of false hope, shrill promises and tired rhetoric.Gone are the bold promises of change, replaced by a tired candidate whose gaffes show an amateur who may not be ready for prime time. As the aura of confidence and hope fades, a typical arrogant, political swagger emerges, revealing an opportunistic candidate who adapts his positions to the audience and his strategy to the shifting sands of public opinion.

The concert hall at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino this month features a boxing match with welterweight David Estrada, country singer Reba McEntire and rock star Carlos Santana. But the 77-year-old Russian taking center stage Wednesday night doesn't fight, sing, or play power chords.

Obama, Bitterness, Meet the Press, and the Old Politics
by Robert Reich
I was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, 61 years ago. My father sold $1.98 cotton blouses to blue-collar women and women whose husbands worked in factories. Years later, I was secretary of labor of the United States, and I tried the best I could — which wasn’t nearly good enough — to help reverse one of the most troublesome trends America has faced: The stagnation of middle-class wages and the expansion of poverty. Male hourly wages began to drop in the early 1970s, adjusted for inflation. The average man in his 30s is earning less than his father did thirty years ago. Yet America is far richer. Where did the money go? To the top.

U.S. executions are all but sure to resume soon after a nationwide halt, cleared Wednesday by a splintered Supreme Court that approved the most widely used method of lethal injection.Virginia immediately lifted its moratorium; Oklahoma and Mississippi said they would seek execution dates for convicted murderers, and other states were ready to follow after nearly seven months without an execution in the United States.

Rogers extends deal; Rhodes returns
by Sun-Sentinel.com
Neil Rogers isn't going anywhere and Randi Rhodes is back. Rogers has agreed to a new five-year contract with WQAM (AM 560), which will keep him on the air through 2013. The deal calls for a substantial pay cut, more a reflection of the financial situation at the station than Rogers' performance. However, Rogers will still be the highest paid personality in South Florida radio--and it won't be close.
Will 'elitist' label stick to Obama?
by Kristi Keck
Sen. Barack Obama is saddled with a potentially toxic image problem -- that he has an elitist attitude. It has made him a target of attacks from Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. John McCain, the presumed Republican nominee. It's ironic that one presidential candidate could hang that label on another, said Dr. Drew Westen, professor of psychology and psychiatry at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and author of "The Political Brain."
