Constitutional lawyer: Bush 'ordered war crimes'
by Nick Juliano
This week's revelation of another secret Bush administration memo that seemed to eliminate any boundaries on the treatment of detainees added to the already substantial evidence that US military and intelligence interrogators have abused and perhaps even tortured prisoners rounded up during the "war on terror."
Castro victim's kids win record verdict
by Alfonso Chardy
Rafael del Pino Siero, a U.S. citizen, was one of Fidel Castro's first friends at the University of Havana -- and one of the first former allies Castro imprisoned after taking power in 1959.Del Pino Siero, who had broken with the guerrilla leader over suspicions that Castro was a communist, was captured while trying to help a Cuban escape to Miami in July 1959. He died in his prison cell 18 years later at age 51, leaving behind in Miami two youngsters: Rafael del Pino Jr. and his sister Milagros Suárez.
Barack Hates America - What Regular People Are Hearing
by Alicia Morgan
Yesterday, I went for my long-overdue hair appointment with the Prince of Peroxide, my friend Eddy. He asked me how my book was coming and I told him it was in the process of being edited, and then he and I got talking about politics, as we usually do at that point. He's Canadian and his wife is American, but he's a pretty progressive guy for a 'normie' (i.e. someone who isn't up to his tits in the interwebs about politics.)
Skybus becomes third airline this week to close
by CNN
Skybus Airlines announced Friday it is shutting down its passenger flights -- becoming the third airline this week to cease operations. The low-cost carrier couldn't overcome "the combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment," the company said Friday. "These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier."
White Guys Are Back
by Gail Collins
It was probably inevitable. The historic contest between a woman and an African-American for the presidential nomination is now all about white men. Not that the white male voters asked for this. They’ve been uncommitted, supporting Hillary in one contest and Barack in the next. But all that hemming and hawing has turned them into the deciding factor in the big upcoming primary in Pennsylvania.
Hillary's Flimsy Case for the Nomination
by Matt Taibbi
In the space of three short months, I've contrived to write two lengthy, gloating political obituaries for Hillary Clinton, only to see both of them blow up in my face after fantastic eleventh-hour comebacks that ended with scenes of the Hillmeister doing the dual flabby-arm raise on CNN while gusts of confetti whooshed across the room, obscuring almost everything except the shocking results blaring out from the crawl on the bottom of the screen. There was a time when this race looked like it might become the most uplifting in a generation. It's now threatening to become the most divisive and disturbing. It is a good time to ponder how that happened — and to address a few of the other Frequently Asked Questions about this depraved circus that is now poised to continue well past Pennsylvania.
How the Associated Press Lies About the Occupation of Iraq
by David Swanson
This typical pre-Petraeus II article shows well the habit that the AP and most of the rest of the US corporate media have of lying about the funding of the occupation of Iraq: "Dems Plead With Bush on Iraq "By ANNE FLAHERTY "Democratic leaders told President Bush on Friday that it's not too late to change course in Iraq and pleaded with him not to hand the war off to the next president.
Maybe Randi Rhodes wasn't too far off the mark
by Ed Kociela
Why is it OK for a black preacher to shout "nigger" in a crowded church, but a white woman can't call Hillary Clinton a "fucking whore" while doing a stand-up comedy routine?I'd like an answer from the PC Patrol on this after Air America yanked radio host Randi Rhodes off the air. Her bosses pulled the plug when Rhodes made her comment about Clinton.
The Great Carbon Con: Can Offsetting Really Help To Save The Planet?
by Sophie Morris
It all started with Sting, this fad for owning one’s very own patch of tropical rainforest, though it is probably unfair to blame him entirely for creating the boom industry that buying up forests piecemeal has become.0404 02 1It is 20 years since the musician first set foot in Brazil and pledged to fight the cause of the Yanomami Indians, setting up the Rainforest Foundation to protect forests and their indigenous inhabitants.
Video: Conyers sarcastically 'thrilled' with McCain apologies for anti-MLK holiday votes
by David Edwards and Mike Sheehan
Veteran Democratic lawmaker John Conyers (D-MI) knocked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for his onetime stance against establishing a holiday for American civil rights icon Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the senator's recent apologies for it amid his run for the White House.
Clinton ramps up call to count Fla, Mich
by Beth Fouhy
Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton Saturday strengthened her pitch to allow disputed primaries in Michigan and Florida to be counted in the nominating contest, noting the vote totals had been officially recognized in each state."Some say their votes should be ignored and the popular vote in Michigan and Florida should be discounted. Well, I have a different view," Clinton said at a rally here. "The popular vote in Florida and Michigan has already been counted. It was determined by election results, it was certified by election officials in each state, it's been officially tallied by the secretary of state in each state, and the question is whether those 2.3 million Democrats will be honored and their delegates seated by the Democratic party."
Ohio Hospital Contests a Story Clinton Tells
by Deborah Sontag
Over the last five weeks, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York has featured in her campaign stump speeches the story of a health care horror: an uninsured pregnant woman who lost her baby and died herself after being denied care by an Ohio hospital because she could not come up with a $100 fee.
