Clinton rejects calls to quit Democratic race
by CNN
Sen. Hillary Clinton on Saturday rejected calls by supporters of rival candidate Barack Obama to quit the Democratic presidential race, and Obama said Clinton should remain in race "as long as she wants." "The more people get a chance to vote, the better it is for our democracy," the New York senator and former first lady told supporters at a rally in Indiana, which holds a May 6 primary.
Universal Health Care Doesn't Mean We're Entitled to All the Health Care in the Universe
by Russ Wellen
The AFL-CIO and its community arm, Working America, just released their 2008 Health Care for America Survey. Most of the 26,419 online respondents are insured, employed, and college graduates -- those, the report explains, most likely to react positively to America's health care system.
How German "intelligence" helped fabricate the case for war in Iraq.
by Michael Kwiatkowski
One of the reasons the Bush-Cheney regime was able to lie so effectively to the American public in selling its case for invading Iraq was the appearance of legitimacy that came from foreign intelligence agencies. Five years after the invasion and occupation of Iraq by the United States of America (with a coalition of coerced and bribed allies that eventually fell apart as the occupation went sour), the truth of how German intelligence officials helped fabricate the case for war is being told -- but not in America.
It is time for some frank talk about legalizing marijuana
by Ed Kociela
Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank is proposing a bill that would remove federal penalties for possession and use of small amounts of marijuana. Why do we need a federal bill?Because the rest of the country is far behind Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Oregon in decriminalizing the herb, with Michigan on the verge of approving a similar bill.
This hate-filled piece of propaganda should fade into obscurity, where it belongs.
by Michael Kwiatkowski
It is little more than a makeshift collage, but it contains a horror show of images meant to distort Islam. Dutch right-wing politician Geert Wilders has launched his long-awaited video screed criticizing the Koran. Criticism is mounting. And rightly so. The video, a highly offensive sack of bile, opens with a passage from the Quran (the Muslim bible) immediately followed by footage of the September 11, 2001 attacks on America. The exercise in deception and outright anti-Muslim bigotry deteriorates from there.
Movie Review: Stop Loss
by Mark Biskeborn
Opening in cinemas across the country tonight, this movie is required viewing for anyone with a heart-beat. Its emotional drive keeps your pulse racing. You could go watch a flick about a bank robbery or a border crossing…but, hey, that’s been done before.
I'm just missayin'
by Ed Naha
Man, did I have a tough morning. I went outside to get the newspaper and, from out of nowhere, seven samurai, Bushido blades shimmering, attacked. Pulling an AK-47 out of my bathrobe I mowed them down. Sensing more danger, I whirled as the legendary Golden Gorilla of Oingo-Boingo swung down from a tree, fangs bared. I dispatched it with the grenade I carry in my skivvies for just such an occasion. Grabbing the newspaper, I spotted terrorist leader Ali-Ali Oxenfree closing in for the kill. Unsheathing my scimitar, I beheaded him near the petunias. I then, made it back into the house, discovering D.B. Cooper, alive and well, en route.
Colombian Troops Kill Farmers, Pass Off Bodies as Rebels’
by Juan Forero
All Cruz Elena González saw when the soldiers came past her house was a corpse, wrapped in a tarp and strapped to a mule. A guerrilla killed in combat, soldiers muttered, as they trudged past her meek home in this town in northwestern Colombia.0330 01 1
Let Us Reason Together
by Clint Talbot
You might expect political discourse today would be more informed, sophisticated and well-reasoned than ever, at least in the United States. We’re literate, learned, savvy and used to swimming in massive volumes of information. Thanks to the internet, anyone can easily become an authority on anything from the local library budget to the competing congressional proposals on warrantless wiretapping. More than ever, citizens are able to know what they’re talking about, to back up their assertions with facts (culled from original source material), and to state a logical, well-reasoned case for their conclusions.
Hillary’s St. Patrick’s Day Massacre
by Frank Rich
MOST politicians lie. Most people over 50, as I know all too well, misremember things. So here is the one compelling mystery still unresolved about Hillary Clinton’s Bosnia fairy tale: Why did she keep repeating this whopper for nearly three months, well after it had been publicly debunked by journalists and eyewitnesses?
Surrender Already, Dorothy
by Maureen Dowd
It’s all about the magic, really. And whether we can take a flier on this skinny guy with the strange name and braided ancestry to help us get it back.Bernard Kouchner, the foreign minister of France and a strong supporter of the United States, recently observed that President Bush has done such a number on our image in the world that no one will be able to restore the luster.
John Cusack movie takes on war profiteers
by David Edwards and Chris Tackett
John Cusack was on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher and spoke about his upcoming film, War. Inc., which according to Cusack focuses on the military-industrial complex. The film, says Cusack, differs from other films inspired by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan because, it "has a much more absurdist take on [war]."
