Why are there Suicide Bombers?
by Mark Biskeborn
Are suicide bombers similar to others who commit suicide? Do they derive their motivations from the same sources? The more than four suicide bombings just last Monday to mark Cheney's visit to Iraq, keep this question alive every day we walk down the street. A woman entered a mosque in Karbala, killing dozens and wounding another hundred. What drove her to this?
Bernanke: Lover of Wall Street, Casual Acquaintance of Students
by Allison Kilkenny
This month on Wall Street, traders hyperventilated into paper bags, and ordinary citizens feigned understanding of terms like “securities trading” and “wealth management.” The long and short of it is clear: bad stuff is happening. The times are turbulent, and we’re all in a lot of trouble.
Putting Out the Fire With Gasoline
by Michael Fox
Two hundred billion - here, two hundred billion - there: before you know it we’re talking about a lot of money! When I introduced you to the Weimar dollar, the government’s proactive devaluation of the currency had just begun. On February 5, Congress and Bush approved a plan to “stimulate the economy” by distributing tax rebates of just $600 to millions of middle-income taxpayers. To each taxpayer, of course, it’s a drop in the bucket that will neither change their lives nor stimulate the larger economy, as the effect of merely printing all that money will be to devalue the currency, thus creating inflation in the most basic imported commodity (oil), and in the end, that money will, therefore, end up in the hands of the oil companies only. Meanwhile, the damage to the currency will have begun.
George W. Hoover, or, History, What a Bitch
by Stephen Pizzo
In 1932, Edward Angly published a short book filled with optimistic forecasts about the economy offered by President Herbert Hoover and his associates. The sarcastic title of his book was, "Oh Yeah?."I've found myself echoing that title almost every day of late as I listen to President Bush and his associates try to reassure us that things are not as bad as they seem. Oh Yeah?

Why?
by William Rivers Pitt
Five years in Iraq. That's 1,825 days since "Shock and Awe" lit up the skies above Baghdad, all of which was captured live and in living color by unblinking CNN cameras with unobstructed views of the carnage.3,991 United States soldiers have died in Iraq since then. That's a little more than two United States soldiers killed per day. Every day. For five years.
Five Years of a Disastrous War and the Bills are Coming Due
by Dave Lindorff
It's appropriate that on this week of the fifth anniversary of the criminal US invasion of Iraq, we are also seeing several other things: the death toll of American troops in that doomed adventure is rising past 4000, the economy is sliding into a recession which could be deep and long, and the financial markets are teetering on the edge of a possibly historic collapse.

Bush: Al Qaeda is in Iraq, stealing our oil
by Eric Brewer
I had a lot of fun at the White House Wednesday afternoon, and not because I made Dana Perino mad. In fact, I felt a little sorry for her today. It's not her fault that Bush's speechwriters put ludicrous statements into his speeches. It all started when I came across the following line in the President's Iraq War Birthday speech:
Can GOP Voters Spoil the Dem Race?
by Hilary Hylton
As if Democrats didn't have enough problems deciding upon their presidential nominee this year, now they must contend with the possibility that Republicans are deliberately crossing party lines to prolong the bitterly contested race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. In recent weeks, conservative talk radio stars Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham have urged loyal listeners to vote for the much-despised Clinton in open Democratic primaries so as to prevent Obama from sealing the nomination, and there are some indications that their calls have already been heeded in states like Texas and Mississippi.

John McCain, R-Ariz., and 63 percent for Obama.
Story behind the story: The Clinton myth
by Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen
One big fact has largely been lost in the recent coverage of the Democratic presidential race: Hillary Rodham Clinton has virtually no chance of winning. Her own campaign acknowledges there is no way that she will finish ahead in pledged delegates.
