From Straight Talk Express to K Street Express: McCain implodes
by Weldon Berger
John McCain's campaign bus, the Straight Talk Express, has officially become a rolling punch line to the joke of the GOP presidential primaries. There has simply never been a primary for either major party as ridiculous as the 2008 GOP effort. Mitt Romney, who would easily have won the Phil Gramm award for financial futility had not Rudy Giuliani spent $50 million to earn a single delegate, is now considering reentering the race in the wake of damaging revelations about John McCain's sluttish relationships with lobbyists and his efforts to game the public election financing system. Fred Thompson, widely viewed on the right as a man of unquestionably presidential timber, left the race amid the impression that he never actually entered it. Ron Paul, the lone anti-Iraq occupation candidate on the GOP side, couldn't even grab a majority of anti-occupation Republicans. California Congressman Duncan Hunter sank without a ripple. Of all the failed Republican candidates, Coloradan Tom Tancredo was probably the most successful: he didn't get any delegates, but he did manage to instill a Pavlovian foaming of the mouth in the other candidates whenever the subject of undocumented immigrants came up.

The headline: 'The Toll of a Campaign.'
Some thoughts on wading through the morass that is the presidential campaign
by Wagenvoord
I don’t look for perfection in politicians. Call me a cynic, if you will, but if I can achieve eighty percent on the compatibility scale, I’m happy. Nor do I put that much store in the issues, unless it’s a fringe issue like McCain’s hundred-year occupation of Iraq. I fully understand that what a politician says to get elected and what a politician does once in office is not always one in the same.
Obama, Osama, Hussein - drop a name, bait voter Arab-phobia
by Pierre Tristam
In the late 1970s, the FBI decided to test the corruptibility of congressmen. It was easy, and slightly unfair. Congressmen are moths to corruption's flame, and bribing at the time hadn't yet been entirely disguised as "campaign financing." So all the FBI had to do was hire an ex-felon to set up a rickety con and videotape congressmen taking the bait. Most Americans' sense of fair play would have taken offense, as courts did, at the sliminess of the FBI's entrapment. But the FBI's one stroke of genius was to disguise the bribers as Arabs representing a rich, oily sheik. It worked. The public would forgive "policemen's presents," as Mark Twain called kickbacks. They'd never forgive consorting with Arabs. One senator, five congressmen and a few other lesser moths were convicted in what became known as the Abscam scandal (the FBI's front company was called Abdul Enterprises).
Goin' Down Slow
by Bob Burnett
A memorable blues song goes, "I have had my fun, if I don't get well no more...my health is failing and I'm goin' down slow." The songwriter, St. Louis Jimmy Oden, probably had in mind the rough life of bluesman, but his lyrics could easily be used to describe the current state of the American economy.

A Driving Force
by Bob Herbert
Maybe he can’t help himself. If William Manchester is to be believed, Ralph Nader got a fair amount of his exasperating, nonstop, take-no-prisoners-style of proselytizing from his father, Nathra, who owned a restaurant and bakery in the factory town of Winsted, Conn.
