McCain Disputed On 1999 Meeting
by James V. Grimaldi and Jeffrey H. Birnbaum
Broadcaster Lowell "Bud" Paxson yesterday contradicted statements from Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign that the senator did not meet with Paxson or his lobbyist before sending two controversial letters to the Federal Communications Commission on Paxson's behalf.
When the Terrorists Were 'Our Guys': A Special Report
by Robert Parry
In 1976, when George H.W. Bush was CIA director, the U.S. government tolerated right-wing terrorist cells inside the United States and mostly looked the other way when these killers topped even Palestinian terrorists in spilling blood, including a lethal car bombing in Washington, D.C., according to newly obtained internal government documents.
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
by Ed Naha
There are some days, I believe this is the 2,575th consecutive one, when I sincerely believe the only way we're going to see significant change in our government is if an asteroid the size of friggin' Montana slams into D.C.Last week, Congress again ignored Iraq, unemployment, various assaults on the Constitution and our failing financial future in order to concentrate on more important things - like athletes taking steroids. Our President, meanwhile, miffed that the House didn't grant phone companies retroactive immunity for cooperating with his illegal and slap-happy snooping on citizens, donned his Yosemite Sam costume and growled that America will now be subject to a terrorist attack that will make 9/11 look like a firecracker.
No Wonder Clinton Ended Up Impeached
by Steve Young
"We understood that he [McCain] did not speak directly with him [Vicki Iseman Client]. Now it appears he did speak to him. What is the difference?... It's not that big a deal." -McCain Attorney, Bob Bennett, who was Bill Clinton's attorney during his impeachment
How Much Damage Will Clinton Do Before She Folds?
by Paul Rogat Loeb
In the wake of ten straight losses, Clinton's going to need some miracles to win, and Mike Huckabee's already ahead of her in line for divine intervention. But the question is how much damage she'll do to Obama and the Democratic chances before she quits.
You are all NUTS! Yes...even YOU.
by xxdr_zombiexx
Just when liberals thought it was safe to start identifying themselves as such, an acclaimed, veteran psychiatrist is making the case that the ideology motivating them is actually a mental disorder.Ouch.Truthiness hurts, don't it?Who is this psychiatrist, so wise in the ways of science?
Unfinished Business
by Bob Patterson
In this year’s State of the Union speech, President George W. Bush mentioned that he had unfinished business that needed to be completed before he left office. He was rather vague about what he meant. Was he referring to finding the missing WMD’s, finding Osama, or taking military action against Iran? The mainstream media made no attempt at determining what exactly he was trying to say with his cryptic words. Whatever he has in mind, the public will learn the meaning of those words in the next 11 months. Perhaps he really did mean finding those elusive WMD’s and those darn old aluminum tubes.
60 Minutes to Air Don Siegelman Story
by Margaret Kimberley
Don Siegelman was the Democratic governor of Alabama. He is now sitting in federal prison, after being convicted of bribery. Siegelman was elected in 1998 but was defeated under suspicious circumstances in 2002. There is evidence that the election was stolen. There is also evidence that his prosecution was selective, and took place on orders from Karl Rove.
John McCain, Then and Now
by Stephen Pizzo
Way back in 1988 my co-authors and I were putting the final touches to our book, Inside Job: The Looting of America's Savings and Loans when someone slipped us a plain brown envelop. Inside was a transcript of a meeting between thrift regulators and five US senators who had interceded on behalf of Arizona S&L owner Charles Keating. At the time the regulators were warning that Keating's thrift, Lincoln Savings and Loan, was dangerously insolvent and that Keating and his cohorts -- including then junk bond king, Mike Milken, were robbing the federally-insured thrift blind -- or, more precisely, robbing the US taxpayers blind.
The Politics of the Oscars
by Bob Burnett
It's always dangerous to read too much into trends in popular culture. Nonetheless, there seems to be a strong relationship between the five movies nominated for best picture of 2007 and polls showing 67 percent of Americans believe the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction.
Hillary on the High Road?
by The New York Times
A referee would stop the fight. Hillary Clinton is exhausted, and her supporters are becoming increasingly demoralized. The candidate who tried to present herself as inevitable has been out-maneuvered nearly every step of the way by a prodigy with a warm and brilliant smile who still seems as energetic as an athlete doing calisthenics before a big game.
Snake Oil Sellers of the Christian Right?
by Khody Akhavi
The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs came under heavy criticism earlier this month from Muslim and religious freedom advocacy groups after it invited to a conference three self-professed “former terrorists” with strong links to the Christian right.0222 06
Obama Fever Is Breaking On the Web
by Jose Antonio Vargas
It's the nature of the Web -- and, really, of life. What goes up must come down. What's popular becomes too popular. What's seen as hip and hot and cool eventually gets mocked.Even, yes, Barack Obama. In recent days, sites have popped up indicating that the ongoing online Obamamania has hit a wall. What kind of wall? A snarky, ironic, this-Obama-thing-has-gotten-over-the-top wall. Obama's smiling mug is mashed up on countless faces on SenatorObamas.com. He's Sumobama. He's Pharaohbama. He's Navajobama, complete with a blue-and-white feathered headdress. The blog Is Barack Obama the Messiah? features a photo of the Illinois senator standing on a flight of stairs, Christlike, above an adoring crowd while a ray of light beams from above.
Clinton pushes debate moment in new ad
by February 23, 2008
Democrat Hillary Clinton is launching a new ad in Ohio and Texas Saturday that features portions of her widely-praised final answer in CNN's debate last week — the campaign's latest effort to make the moment a defining one in the New York senator's White House bid.
