Democrats Target Kucinich for Defeat
by Margaret Kimberley
In his presidential campaigns in 2004 and 2008, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich told Democrats a brutal truth. Party orthodoxy is a disaster, a series of lies that must no longer be accepted. While his opponents, Obama, Clinton and Edwards, made it clear they weren't serious about ending the occupation of Iraq, Kucinich presented a plan to do just that. When they made the case for leaving a failed for-profit health care system intact, Kucinich said that non-profit universal care was possible. He co-sponsored legislation calling for impeachment hearings against Vice President Cheney and President Bush while leadership declared the criminals should go free.
Hoisted on Their Own Petards
by Stephen Pizzo
After decades of reporting on white collar crooks I learned something interesting. I learned that the best way to catch such otherwise respectable appearing evil-doers is to let them catch themselves. The other thing I learned is that hubris almost always guaranteed they would eventually do just that.
Remember
by Brian Morton
Perhaps on Jan. 20, 2009, we may become a democracy again. But a few things have to happen before that date, many of which I'm not so certain will occur, no matter who wins the election this November.Last week, the U.S. attorney general, the lead law-enforcement official in the country, representing the citizenry, essentially said that if the president told him not to prosecute offenses made by his administration, that is what he'd do.
No Roses: Love Songs From Punk to Pashtun
by RJ Eskow
It's Valentine's Day again. I can't grow flowers or weave baskets, but I can make a pretty fair music playlist. I wooed my wife with mixtapes - a classic Nick Hornby move before anyone had even heard of Nick Hornby. (It was a long-distance romance.) Hint to aspiring suitors with a good music collection and CD's to burn: Be eclectic, but don't force it. I've got a list of suggestions below, culled from my "greatest hits" from years gone by. Here are some highlights:
Plastic, people: Stimulate the earth by refusing to spend
by Alan Bisbort
The Senate passed a "stimulus package" this week that will piss another $150 billion down a hole the size of the Pacific Ocean. The "trickle down" effect of this package means that most Americans will get anywhere from $300 to $600 apiece.Don't get me wrong. The vast majority of Americans need this money. That's part of the problem. We're all broke. Recent consumer studies have shown that most Americans are using the "gift cards" they got (and gave, on credit) this past Christmas to purchase food and other basic necessities.
Musharraf: 'Pakistan is more important than human rights'
by David Edwards and Nick Juliano
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf made clear that he does not respect western human right standards and would not make a priority of upholding them."Pakistan is more important than human rights," Musharraf said recently during a global economic forum in Sweeden. "Human rights serves Pakistan; Pakistan does not serve Human rights."
Report: Clinton strategist explodes at advertising team
by Michael Roston
After losing eight primary contests in a row to Senator Barack Obama, Senator Hillary Clinton's staff has made some major leadership changes, with campaign chair Patti Solis Doyle and her top lieutenant Mike Henry stepping down. But the changes may not have alleviated all the tensions with Clinton's campaign.
Constitutional scholar pans Clinton for fleeing from FISA fight
by David Edwards and Nick Juliano
Constitutional lawyer Jonathan Turley criticized the Senate for bowing to President Bush's demands for more spying power and amnesty for potentially law-breaking telecommunications companies."The fix has been in for some time on the unlawful surveillance program and the torture program," he said Wednesday on Countdown with Keith Olbermann. "Many Democrats and Republicans were aware of the program and they are actively helping the White House to try to shut down any confrontation on the issue. This is also helped by the fact the telecoms are one of the five most powerful lobbying forces in Washington, and many of these members have close ties to those lobbyists."
